Canadian whisky

1. A variety of whisky distilled in Canada. Historically, Canadian whisky had a higher rye content in its mash than most American whiskeys, leading to some confusion when older writings refer to “rye.” Canadian whisky was often smuggled into the United States during Prohibition, leading to the popularity of brands like Canadian Club and Crown Royal for decades after its repeal (most recently, this trend returned to popular consciousness thanks to Mad Men‘s Don Draper, who drank Canadian Club).

Note: Like Scotch whisky, Canadian whisky is spelled without an “e.”
