- Refers to a distilled spirit, wine, beer, cocktail, or other alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverage that has been aged in a wooden barrel (also known as a cask). Barrels for aging alcoholic beverages are typically made of charred oak, and impart a distinctive caramel color and woody flavor to their contents over time. Common barrel-aged spirits are whiskey, rum, brandy, and tequila, but barrel-aged gins, liqueurs, and even pre-made cocktails have become more popular in recent years. Most wines and sherries also spend some time in wooden barrels.
